Aluminium bi-fold doors can be used in many different ways and places...

    • Many double glazed conservatories in England incorporate double French doors as a way to provide access to the outside and/or living area, but also let in light and air. By integrating bi-fold doors into a new or existing conservatory one significantly enhances the level of access, light and air permitted, which is why more and more homeowners are moving away from specifying double glazed French doors, but instead opting for their bi-folding counterparts when investing in a new or existing conservatory. Double glazed aluminium bi-fold doors are particularly suited to a lean-to style of conservatory as the shape and dimensions of lean-to conservatories often allow more scope for wider bi-fold doors with three or more panes.

    • Full blown orangeries (with a flat roof and a roof lantern light) and hybrid orangeries (no flat roof), both which have brick-built columns and an external cornice are arguably the best glass extension styles for a multi-pane bi-fold door. The typically rectangular shape of orangery extensions lend themselves perfectly to a bi-folding and sliding doors of up to seven panes wide, which then acts as an easily removable divide between your home and garden. In seconds you can effortlessly open up a full aluminium framed glass wall and blur the boundaries between outdoor and indoor living – a bi-fold door’s ease of operation is impressive and the divide can be reinstated as quickly as it was pushed to one or more sides. A double glazed bi-fold door is commonly installed on the widest facet of an orangery but some homeowners in England actually choose to incorporate more than one bi-fold making their living space even more versatile.

    • Aluminium double glazed bi-fold doors can be fitted to the main part of a house in the same way that sliding patio and double French doors are often used. If internal space is at a premium, Hazlemere can manufacture their bespoke aluminium doors so that they “open out” which, as the name suggests, means that when the door panes concertina they group on the outside. However, if you’d rather and space allows, Hazlemere can fabricate their aluminium bi-folding doors to “open-in” if more outside useable space is preferred. Living rooms and kitchens are the two most common rooms to be augmented by a bi-fold but, equally, these doors have been used at particularly luxurious dwellings as a grand way to access upper floor balconies.

    • To be classed as a ‘permitted development’ and be exempt from Building Regulations and in most cases planning permission, double glazed conservatories must, among other things, have an external grade door separating it from the main property – what better way to do this than with a thermally broken aluminium bi-fold door? When closed an internal bi-fold door will allow you to see into and through your conservatory and, of course, allow more natural light into your home whilst meeting the requirement to have a separate door. When you want to access your conservatory, or merge the two rooms together, a bespoke bi-fold door will more than oblige and create one large open plan space.

There is only one configuration for a two pane aluminium bi-fold door but, as with all bi-fold doors, this configuration can be manufactured to either open-out or open-in. This minimalist style of bi-fold door could be used internally to connect a room with an orangery or conservatory, or it could be used on one of the smaller facets of a double glazed orangery or conservatory.

Housemaster will make a bi-fold door that suits your home and your lifestyle...

    • There are numerous aluminium bi-fold door configuration options to choose from, each of which offer a slightly different functionality. The intended location, purpose and frequency of use will have a bearing on the best configuration of bi-fold door for you and your home. Although there is something satisfying about opening a bi-fold door to its full capacity, we understand that it must also offer a more practical way of entering or leaving the house which is why we offer configurations with integrated “travel” doors, and some with both travel doors and double French doors which offer even greater flexibility for everyday comings and goings. What is more our doors operate up to 3 metres in height, so achieve far greater heights than normal residential doors thanks to having high quality black “piano” hinges.

    • An integrated travel door is available on aluminium bi-fold doors with three, four, five, six or seven panes. Thanks to these configurations, each allows one to be integrated as a single hinged door which functions much like a normal external entrance door to your property, operating independently of the other bi-folding or hinged panes. Depending on which configuration you choose, the hinged aluminium travel door will either open in the same direction or the opposite direction to the bi-folding panes. In either case the inclusion of a travel door does not inhibit the full opening of double glazed bi-fold doors.

    • If you cannot choose between a traditional French door or contemporary bi-fold door, you can should you wish have both. Aluminium bi-fold doors with four or six panes can feature an integrated pair of French doors which operate both in the traditional way and as bi-folding doors too. Opting for aluminium bi-fold doors with integrated French doors gives you so many different functionalities – as it gives you the choice of opening just one half of the French doors for quick access or to open both door leaves; or to perform the full concertina operation of the bi-fold door and completely remove the double glazed divide between the indoors and outdoors.

    • Depending on your exact needs we can manufacture our aluminium bi-fold doors to open-in or open-out, and to the left or the right, or both! This terminology refers to the place in which the door sections are grouped when the doors are open and they can either group inside the room (open-in) or outside of it (open-out). The direction in which the doors open often comes down to personal preference but the vast majority of people choose the open-out, as a) these have a slightly better weather rating than open in doors and b) so that internal furniture and other household items can be positioned adjacent to the bi-fold door without getting in the way of its operation. Your experienced Housemaster design consultant will be able to offer more helpful advice when it comes to making this decision.

Add to the wow factor of an aluminium bi-fold door with your choice of colour...

    • The colour options for Hazlemere Window Company Ltd's bespoke aluminium bi-fold doors are as varied as the configuration options and your first choice will be whether to opt for a gloss, matt or satin powder coated finish. There are over 600 standard RAL colour finishes to choose from (with RAL 9910Gi being the least cost white gloss finish), so finish wise there are an array of possibilities. Dual-colour finishes are, as the name suggests allows one colour/finish on the inside and another colour/finish on the outside so that you can complement both your internal décor and outdoor space with the most appropriate shade, with many available in gloss, matt and satin finishes.

    • An even larger selection of RAL colours and finishes are available, but sadly at a huge premium, as these are not stock colours, so not a cost effective option as the powder has to be purchased specially with any wastage factored into the additional cost you’d have to pay. Also non-standard colours and finishes will add 2-4 additional weeks onto the delivery time. Whatever powder coated aluminium finish you choose, the common denominator of all of Hazlemere Window Company Ltd’s RAL colour options is a low maintenance, durable finish that will retain its looks for years to come. Our D handles come in a choice of white, black or matching RAL colour at no extra cost.

    • The external frame of a bi-fold door needs to complement the external architectural features of your home, as should the internal frame complement the internal décor of the room in which it is fitted, so one colour or even finish may not necessarily suffice, so you may want to consider a dual coloured aluminium bi-fold door, which as the name suggests, is one colour on the inside and a different colour on the outside. An example of this is “grey-on-white” – a matt grey like Anthracite Grey RAL 7016M on the outside, and gloss white RAL 9901Gi on the inside to match skirting board, architraves and neutrally decorated rooms.

The finer details can often make a big difference...

    • Most configurations of aluminium bi-fold door will involve the use of two different types of handles. Travel doors and integrated French doors will require a master lever/lever handle which will house a cylinder lock, and will be used to engage the multi-point locking system when the bi-fold door is in the closed position. Each aluminium bi-folding section will also entail the use of a “D-handle” or shoot bolt handle, which is used to release the bi-folding panes from the door frame when opening and, of course, re-engage them when closing. A D-handle is used to push or pull the folding panes as appropriate and can be coloured matched to the internal aluminium frame at no extra cost. All our D handles come as standard with an additional lock and key to that on the travel door, adding extra security and peace of mind.

    • Hazlemere Window Company Ltd's bi-folding door handles are available in the same colours as on our aluminium and UPVC residential doors and French doors, namely black, polished chrome, gold, satin chrome, white or graphite chrome. The satin chrome is a duller matt looking finish, whereas the graphite chrome has a slight brushed chrome look and feel, each aesthetically different from the brighter polished chrome handles if they would be your preference.

Wide-span aluminium bi-folding doors offer excellent accessibility by definition...

The ease of operation and wide aperture created when any of our aluminium bi-fold doors is open means that these highly functional doors can drastically improve a home’s accessibility. The sliding operation of a bi-fold door relies on a high quality stainless steel track on which rollers, which are fitted to the door sashes (sections), glide along without resistance.

The same rollers are fitted with a small brush on one end to keep the tracks free of dust and dirt and magnetic catches stop hinged pass doors from blowing shut. More important than that however is the low aluminium threshold that is available with our bi-fold doors which can be positioned almost even with floor level so that a seamless passage can be made by all guests including wheelchair users. It is wise to have some threshold height to keep out driving wind and rain.

  • Built-in thermal efficiency minimises the heat loss from your home...

Built-in thermal efficiency minimises the heat loss from your home...

Large aluminium bi-fold doors can take up a significant proportion of a walls surface area, especially with Housemaster’s bi-folding doors that can be up to 3000mm in height, so it is important that they act well as an insulator, keeping your home warm by preventing heat loss. Hazlemere Window Company Ltd’s aluminium bi-fold doors are all “thermally broken” and can be specified with either a 24mm or 28mm wide toughened safety glass sealed units.

Either option acts in much the same way, reflecting heat back into your room as it tries to escape through the glass. The cavity between the two panes of glass is filled with an inert gas called Argon, which being a dense gas, is much better than dry air at controlling the transfer of heat. Intelligently designed seals and gaskets prevent leakage at the point where two panes of a bi-fold meet, and the door itself is thermally broken which means that the aluminium frames and sashes are built with a centrally integrated polyamide barrier to stop the aluminium conducting heat. Each of Hazlemere Windows sealed units has a black warm edge spacer bar that reduces thermal transmittance from the cold exterior to the warm interior.

  • Style does not come at the expense of security with our bi-fold doors...

Style does not come at the expense of security with our bi-fold doors...

A multi-point locking system is at the heart of the security of all our aluminium bi-folding and sliding doors. When the locking system is engaged, it does so at several different points, in several different directions, and into robust “keeps” to ensure that the door sash is firmly fixed into the door frame. The double glazed toughened safety glass sealed units used to glaze the doors are inherently strong and difficult to break.

These units can be internally beaded, meaning that the bead and glass can only be removed by someone who is already in your house. Tested cylinder locks are housed by high security master handles to deter and resist would-be intruders.  The minimalist D handle securing the folding sections of each door throw shoot-bolts into position with one easy action, and there is an indicator slot so you can be sure they are in place. This D handle is key lockable as standard for added security and consequently added peace of mind.
